Fabric Wine & Gift Bags
Published July 15, 2012
Sometimes the best ideas for a creative gift-wrap can be found in your home closet. Here’s an idea for an easy-to-make gift bag for wine or other small gifts. It’s a great way to use up leftover fabric that you love and the bag can be re-used over and over again.
Materials
- Leftover fabric (silks, satins, cottons)
- Matching Thread
- Sewing Machine
- Decorative Adornments (faux flowers, buttons)
- Iron
- Ribbon
Decide whether you want the bag to be used for wine or another small gift. Wine bags will need to be longer and leaner than a regular gift bag.
For a wine bag, cut a piece of fabric 28″ x 12″. Fold over the edges of the whole piece of fabric by 1/2″ and iron flat to make a seam. Using your sewing machine, sew a 1/4″ seam around the whole piece of fabric. With right sides together, fold the fabric and sew up the sides. The finished length should be roughly 14″ long and 6″ wide. Turn the bag right side out.
Place the wine inside the bag and tie off with a coordinating piece of ribbon. Add decorative accessories.
The gift bag is done in a similar fashion. Cut a piece of fabric 20″ x 12″. Fold over the edges of the fabric by 1/2″ and iron flat to make a seam. Sew a 1/4 ” seam around the whole piece of fabric. Fold the right sides together and sew up the sides. Finish off with a ribbon and faux flowers.
These bags make wonderful hostess gifts during the Holiday Season. Make them ahead of time and you will have one when you are in a pinch.
