Are you looking for a unique hostess gift?

Here’s an idea that may spark your interest.

A simple tin can embellished with beautiful fabric and ribbon makes a wonderful first impression. Perfect for a guest room or coffee table arrangement.

  • Medium size tomato or other soup, vegetable can (roughly 10 centimeters in diameter)
  • Decorative Fabric
  •  3/8” Grommets (and grommet setter) (available at craft stores and department stores)
  • Coordinating ribbon
  • Fresh water
  • Fresh Flowers
  • Sewing machine and thread
  • Floral preservative
  • Sharp knife

Remove any label and glue from the tin can. Nail polish remover works well for any glue that is difficult to remove.

Measure the circumference of the can and subtract 1 cm from this measurement. This will be the length of your fabric. The width of the fabric should be 1 cm less than the height of the can.

On your sewing machine, sew a 1-cm. seam around the measured piece of fabric.

With your grommet and setter, carefully follow the directions of the grommet manufacturer to place your grommets into the fabric. It’s best to practice this step on a piece of scrap fabric first, before you do the final grommets on your material. Working on a hard surface is recommended to achieve the best results.

Cut a piece of ribbon long enough to tie up the fabric around the vase plus an extra 15-cm. to tie the bow. Lace the ribbon through the grommet holes and tie at the top of the can.

Fill the tin with fresh water.

Cut the ends of your flowers with a sharp knife. Place the floral preservative in the water and immerse your flowers inside. Arrange the flowers so that they cascade over the edges of the tin.

Be sure to check the water level of your arrangement periodically.

Once the fresh flowers are finished, you can re-use the vase for future arrangements.
